Popular Elective Options

Below are some of the electives that many residents choose to pursue.  This list is just a starting point, it is not exhaustive by any means.  If there is something not on this list that interest then you can pursue it with the program leadership.  In general, electives should add to the mission of the residency by improving your ability to perform in the future as a Navy officer in the role of aerospace, public health, occupational, or primary care physician.


Bushmaster is an annual event for medical and nursing students at the Uniformed Services University (USU) School of Medicine.  Residents volunteer to be staff and take part in training the next generation of our armed forces medical professionals.


This is a great one-week course run by the Navy Ethics and Leadership (NE & L) Command.  NE & L is unique in encouraging critical thought and taking a Socratic approach to teaching and education.  More information is available on the Navy Ethics and Leadership ILC webpage.


BROC is an online training designed to give O1 - O3 officers a basic introduction to the organization, structure, business practices, and operational policies of the Naval Medical Department.  


AROC is a two-week course for O4 - O5 officers to learn more about the business of Navy Medicine.


Joint Medical Operations Course (JMOC) Basic and Advanced

Five-day classroom-only courses focusing on joint and combined operational and medical planning from point of injury/illness to the appropriate capability of care during military operations. JMOC Basic familiarizes students in policy guidance and information relevant to Joint Staff publications.  JMOC Advanced covers planning activities associated with joint military operations by combatant commanders and their subordinate joint force commanders in response to contingencies and crises. In addition, in-depth discussion on the comprehensive system that provides uniform policy and procedures for reporting the ability of the armed forces to fight and to meet the demands of the National Military Strategy.
