Space Medicine

Overview

NASA’s Johnson Space Center has been a hub of human spaceflight activity for over half a century.  It is home to the nation’s astronaut corps, the International Space Station mission operations, the Orion Program, and a host of future space developments.  The center plays a pivotal role in enhancing scientific and technological knowledge to benefit all of humankind.  The rotation involves formal lectures on space medicine topics and issues, as well as familiarization with the medical aspects of International Space Station operations, design, and function over the course of one week.  During the rotation, residents are exposed to various space medicine topics given in presentations, lectures, and tours, such as the medical equipment available to crew members in space, space physiology, radiation monitoring, tours of the training facilities, etc.  To maximize resident learning during this 1-week experience, a minimum understanding of basic space operations must be acquired in advance.
